Finding a therapist that feels right is important. Espen has nearly 20 years’ experience as a psychotherapist and is dedicated to being present in each session with you.

Knowing that your consultant (therapist) is listening and committed to your process of personal growth is vital. The journey to relief from anxiety, depression, shame, and guilt is not one to explore alone.  Espen has clinical experience, advanced training, and the desire to help you navigate through difficult (and often very lonely, isolating) periods of life.

There is no topic that cannot be shared, explored, and supported in life. Espen is prepared to support you through the process of personal vulnerability and growth.  Specializing in attachment (bonding), addressing issues of isolation and loneliness, as well as extensive work with issues of sexuality, infidelity, and trauma (including intimate partner violence), Espen is prepared to assist you in finding your voice, your sense of self-worth, and to guide you in the difficult work that is required for you to find purpose, meaning, and joy in your life.

Whether you want to learn healthier communication skills, change negative behaviors, or simply hope to gain personal growth — Espen will work with you.  Using a postmodern approach, integrating awareness of cultural and intergenerational patterns, Espen can guide you toward your personal goals.

Espen received his first master’s in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and second masters in Marriage & Family Therapy from Alliant International University. Trained in the dynamics of couples and family, Espen has also worked in various positions within the San Diego Mental Health Community.

A professor of psychology at numerous colleges across the county, Espen trains students in more than a dozen courses including marriage and family relations, human sexuality, research methods, child and adolescents, behavioral learning, personality theories, and counseling techniques.  As a sexual relapse prevention specialist, Espen has trained staff at recovery centers throughout the state.
